Step 4

A.  Provide a summary of your perceived areas of strengths and areas of needed improvement

I know I will be very familiar with all of the programs that we will be using, but I think that also will be detrimental to me. I think I may become lazy since I know I am so used to the courses and I am familiar with them. I need to improve my focus, since a large portion of the time I will end up doing storyboards or scripts for cinema when I should be focused on music this block. I believe starting to focus on the clarinet, singing, and film scoring will be things that will tie me down and keep me focused.

B.  Provide the ratio of true to false out of 30

21 True, 9 False

Coure Benchmark Goals

Step 1

What is it that you hope to know and be able to do at the conclusion of the class?

I hope to have a better understanding of classical music history and be able to transfer this knowledge into my knowledge of contemporary music history. I also hope that by the end of this class I will have spent some time practicing clarinet, singing, and film scoring.

What are three things you would like to achieve in order to count your semester as successful?

1. Complete the course with an A average

2. Get some practice in on clarinet and learn the basics of singing

3. Study film scoring and apply my music history knowledge to it

How motivated are you to achieve these goals?

I am very motivated to learn the clarinet and the basics of singing. I really want to be able to sing a piece with my friends in Calliope, and I'd love to practice clarinet and transition my skills back to the sax. This will help me in my future, when I am hopefully minoring in music and still spending a lot of time on the oboe. Film scoring will also help my primary major, so I am excited to be taking a course that will be relevant to what I am doing with my life in and after college. Music history will also help me if I ever have a time period piece, and placing the correct music with it.

How will you increase your motivation if it becomes low during the course of the semester?

I will remind myself that I am working towards studying things that greatly excite me. Also, I will hopefully be able to use my friends to motivate me, as seeing them exceed and doing great things will apply to myself as well.

What strategies can you use to achieve your goals?

Working at home on assignments will definitely help me free up some time during the block in order to achieve my goals. I should also review my notes from contemporary music in order to make the transition much smoother. When I become distracted, I should try to maintain them to musical distractions: talking to others about music, practicing instruments, etc.

What might interfere with your achievement and how can you prevent this interference?

Having friends in the class will definitely be a big interference in keeping myself focused. My hope to prevent this interference is having all interactions with my friends to be music-related so we are helping further each other in our musical abilities.
