Title: Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

Description: The Dark Side of the Moon is Pink Floyd's eighth studio album. It was released on March 1, 1973 and recorded in Abbey Road Studios. The album is a mixture of genres like hard rock, space rock, art rock, progressive rock, and psychedelic rock.

Reasons Why: I really enjoyed this album, and heard the whole thing for the first time a weekend before we learned about it. Pink Floyd's albums have such a unique sound to them, especially this one. I love the "trippy" sound it has, and it just sends me off into space whenever I listen to it.

Jazz

Jazz is a genre that originated in New Orleans from black workers just singing about how they felt. The sad and soulful music spread throughout the town, and eventually white musicians were trying to copy that beautiful music that they were making. This broke down a boundary because the whites were trying to copy the blacks, which eventually brought them closer together.

American Roots Music

Roots music describes the music that started it all, the base, the roots of the music we have today. But to have the base sound of American music, you had to include all of the imigrants and their music, since they are a part of America as well. This broke down a boundary because the Roots Music wasn't just whites, it was all races and their music that they brought to the country.

Rock & Roll

In Rock & Roll, no one cared what race you were. All they cared about was how good your music was. Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard are all Rock & Roll artist that are not white but are very popular. This broke down a boundary because whites used to only listen to music by white musicians, but now they are open and listen to everyone's music.

Broadway

Broadway started out with small entertainment shows, which included whites using "black-face" for comedy. Broadway then started to develop into musicals, which at that time still included the black-facing that lots of people knew. Time moved on and eventually they started including black actors. This broke down a boundary because some musicals had either a black lead or an all black cast and were very popular, showing that race did not indicate popularity.

Step 2

After studying the development of music in America during the past century, where do you think it is headed during the next hundred years?

America's music seems to continue to spiral down into the abyss of using synthesizers and current pop music trends. Lots of musicians will simply go on stage in front of a turn table or nothing at all and simply sing instead of playing an instrument. Now, this does not apply to all of them, but a lot do this. I think music will either spiral down more and more into these synthesized pop songs, or some people may rise up and bring back instruments to the stage.

A.  Comment on your semester achievements in relation to your initial goals

I did produce good quality work for the most part, which was one of my goals in the beginning. As for understanding music history, I believe I have improved from my initial understanding of the history. But I did not overcome my procrastination in the end.

B.   How well did you achieve your goal?  What goals were met?  What goals were not met?

I did receive a better understanding of the history of music. But I did not meet my goal of finishing more stuff on time. I would say that I achieved my goals on an average or mediocre level. 

C.   What has been the greatest benefit/most rewarding aspect of your learning experience?

I have discovered that I should work harder and that independent learning is quite difficult. As for the classes' lessons, I have learned where my favorite genres developed from and how they've played a part in history.

D.   How well did you avoid sources of interference to stay on task?

At school I usually completely avoided interference, but at home I didn't work much on the assignments at all, which put me behind in class. In class I stayed on task and at home I usually wrote 1 sentence before becoming completely distracted.

A.  Comment on how you addressed the weaknesses you identified and/or how you overcame challenges in regards to achieving success this semester

I did not really overcome any challenges, and if anything, I fell behind what I used to be at. I identified my weaknesses as subjects and a few other things. I did improve my note taking and I did retain information better, but overall I have not really changed if not decreased compared to the beginning of the year.

Possibly, but I believe I would probably stick to the same process and flow that I used during this class/semester.

D.  What have you learned about learning?

I have realized that even though most people want to be free range chickens and do their own thing when it comes to learning, it may not be the most beneficial choice for you. Just because you get to learn "by yourself" doesn't mean you'll actually learn. Learning is much more difficult in some cases than I thought.

E.  How does what you learned relate to other things you have been learning or have experienced?

I have discovered that despite my desire to work alone and independently, it may not be the most beneficial way for me to learn things. This has been an experience many times before where I have usually gotten less work done whenever I work alone.

 

F.  How has your thinking about your thinking(metacognition)changed?

I used to believe that I could easily handle most tasks in school on my own due to my thinking being clear. But as tasks began to pile up, I have begun to realize that my thinking isn't as clear as I thought it was.

The quality of my work in the first part of the semester was much better than the second part of the semester. Although this is true, my power-points seemed to be very good quality compared to the rest of my work. My notes were very disorganized the second part of the semester, but overall my work seemed decent.

B.  Did you modify your approach for the second part of the semester or repeat your approach from the first part?

At first I attempted to approach the units differently and develop better answers and notes, but I believe they got significantly worse from the first part of the semester. My notes are no longer organized and I did not schedule my work properly, putting me far behind every week.

Explain why you perceive these concepts or skills to be important

1. It's important for you to learn not only through others but independently as well. This skill/concept is very hard to accomplish since you can get so easily distracted. Blended learning/music studio has taught me about independent learning and how to accomplish work on my own (or not accomplish any work at all).

2. Since I am considering possibly going into music for my career and college major, it is significant to know the background of music. The evolution of music over time is a fascinating thing, and knowing how it built up to today is a very important thing, especially if you're going to study music.

3. I have never really taken notes on a computer before, so it was a bit hard to listen to a movie and write down everything as quickly as possible on a keyboard. But I tried my best and now I feel a bit more confident when it comes to taking notes, which is one of the most important skills for school.
How do you anticipate using these concepts or skills in the future?

As I stated before, I may go into college and my career for music, so having some knowledge about the history of it is good. If I go into musical education, then I could teach kids about the history of 20th century music since I have that knowledge under my belt now. Independent learning is a concept that most people will use for their whole entire lives, and now that I have a better understanding of it I believe I can study things more independently without being distracted. Lastly, notes taking is one of the key factors of passing classes in school, so it is a good skill to have

Step 8

Don't slack off! Yes, the first part of the semester is easier than the second part. But if you adjust yourself too much to the easy first part, you will significantly struggle with the second part of the semester. Try and finish some units ahead of time. The resources are provided and if you have some extra time and have nothing to do, start on the next unit after finishing the current one. Lastly, enjoy these classes. They are all very fun courses with a lot of information to provide, so take advantage and make the best of it.

Step 9

This class was probably my favorite class this semester. The overall organization and freedom yet responsibility is a fantastic feeling. The only thing I'd recommend is having more deadlines, such as "Finish Step _____ by Tuesday" or whatever. It was difficult for me to make myself do work without mini deadlines. Maybe only apply this to students like myself that end up going over the deadline because they did not finish their work in time. Overall I wouldn't really change anything else, this class was very fun and I enjoyed it a lot.
